The school I have placement at, Williamstown Public School, has it’s own ‘Growing Wall’. It’s an indoor system that grows various plants without soil. Instead, the plants roots are wrapped in felt strips that absorb water from the machine as well as electric lights acting as the ‘sun’. The students are growing lettuce, kale, basil, and cilantro. This is such a great learning opportunity for the whole school. The students are able to walk by it every day to check the plants growth!

The Garden Problem pictured below was given to my Teaching at the Primary Division- Mathematics and Art class by our Proffesor Barbara Graves. This problem was given to us as homework and to bring back a week later at our next class. This problem might not seem difficult at first but it’s one that requires deep thinking, problem solving, trial and error and most importantly collaboration with others. Reflecting on my process of solving it is amazing to look back on, I tried a few different things, they weren’t right but they kept leading me in the right direction. I ended up sharing the problem with family and friends and we had to come together to solve it. The following week, the teacher took up the problem and showed us a video of grade 3/4 student’s responses on how they solved the problem, starting with a student who had a more basic answer and then each student built upon the last student’s response until the problem was solved. Interestingly, the steps the children went through till the reached the correct answer were all very similar to what I did to solve it. What I took from this problem is that student’s working collaboratively should occur more often in the classroom. They need to be able to talk to one another and discuss their thinking. They learn from others and can push each other into thinking things they wouldn’t on their own.
